MONTESANO — Mayor Ken Estes appointed Councilman Rocky Howard as the city’s new public works director. The city council confirmed the appointment Tuesday, 5-1; Howard abstained and Councilman Rich Klinger voted no. Howard, a manager with Rognlin’s Construction, resigned his council seat immediately after the vote. He is scheduled to begin May 15.

Back to the drawing board for public works building |

MONTESANO — It’s back to the drawing board for the new Montesano Public Works building. All six bids came in significantly higher than the city hoped or expected.
The low bid of just over $1.8 million by Aberdeen-based Rognlin’s Construction exceeded the total project cost by some $240,000, after design, engineering and other “soft costs” are calculated in.

A group of children wait patiently for the train’s “engineer” to return and take them through the 23rd annual Old Timers’ Fair at Mary M. Knight School in Matlock. The fair featured a “life-size” statue of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox, steam engines, logging demonstrations, tractor parades, classic cars and more. The fair takes place each year the first weekend of May.

MONTESANO — For Montesano tennis, it has been a season of canceled games and traveling to make matches. In their first home court advantage they drew, for the second time this season, the girls of Northwest Christian High School, and delivered a 4-1 victory over the Navigators.
“We played solid today,” said head tennis coach Theresa Helland. “Up and down the line, we just seemed to be a little better.”
The win came on the heels of their recent narrow loss to King’s Way, 3-2. Only able to gain ground in single matches, Kingsway took the number three singles match and both double matches.

Bulldog LingXing Schoch fires her backhand over the net in her first match of the day facing the number one from North West Christian, Jessi Thomas. The two schools have played once already this season, but this is the first homecourt advantage Montesano has had all year, as rain has kept them off the courts.

ELMA — Grays Harbor Fire District 5 commissioners plan to ask voters to approve an increase in their current fire levy by 35 cents per $1,000 of assessed property value to $1.50 per thousand for six years in a special election in conjunction with the Aug. 7 primary election.
However, because the district’s property owners are also paying a refund levy this year, they currently are paying a combined total of $1.42 per thousand. The refund levy will be paid off in 2012, and if the levy lid lift passes, it would actually mean that the bills of property tax payers would be only about 8 cents higher in 2013-2017 than in 2012.
That means tax bill of the owner of a $150,000 home would be only $12 higher in the next six years than it is this year, for a total of $225.

ELMA — The Bulldogs traveled to Elma for their last 1A Evergreen League soccer match against their East County rival Elma. Montesano defeated the Elma Eagles, 2-0.
In a non-consequential meet a couple of things happened: first, the Eagles had already positioned themselves in third place to advance into the District IV playoffs as the 1A Evergreen final berth; second, the Bulldogs took another game away from Elma, bringing their inter-league rival 2012 soccer season to 2-1 versus the Eagles.
