The Montesano Bulldogs found out why the Woodland Beavers and their highly-touted quarterback Isaiah Flanagan are well thought of this season.
Flanagan was unstoppable on Friday, accounting for more than 500 yards of offense as the Beavers handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season, 47-13, in Montesano.
“He’s the real deal,” Montesano head coach Terry Jensen said of Woodland’s 6-foot-2 junior quarterback who passed for 274 yards and ran for 222 yards and five touchdowns. “He’s one of the best players I’ve ever coached against. … He made us look bad, a lot.”
Flanagan led Woodland (5-1, 2-1 GSHL 2A) to a 26-6 halftime lead with three first-half rushing TDs and a 75-yard scoring pass to Cisco Yager in the second quarter.
It was a rough night for Monte’s defense, as the Bulldogs allowed 404 rushing yards and nearly 700 yards of total offense.
“We really struggled tackling in the open field,” Jensen said. “They’re a really good team, no doubt. … We’ve got a lot of work to do and it doesn’t get any easier next week.”
For the second time this season, Monte’s Teegan Zillyett returned a kickoff for a touchdown, this time for 92 yards that cracked the Bulldogs’ scoreboard goose egg with 2:35 left in the second quarter.
Montesano (5-1, 1-0 Evergreen 1A) scored its second touchdown when Sam Winter broke loose for a 69-yard TD run early in the third quarter. Winter ended up with 108 yards on two carries to lead the Bulldogs, who gained 236 yards total on the ground and 74 yards through the air.
