RAINIER — Raymond’s Karlee Freeman put on a record-setting performance, while Montesano’s boys and Willapa Valley’s girls also fared well in the Rainier Icebreaker Invitational track meet on March 17.
Montesano’s boys, with 81 points, fell only five points shy of team champion Kalama. Willapa Valley’s girls also placed second. With 71 points, they were 13 points behind Class 2A White River.
Less than optimal conditions —“The name (of the meet) described the weather,” Willapa Valley coach Dave Ege noted — didn’t faze Freeman. The USC-bound Raymond senior won all four of her events.
She set school records in winning the girls discus in 161-2 and the shot put with a throw of 41 feet. Her winning mark of 122-5 in the girls javelin represented a career best. Freeman also won the 100 meters in 13.24.
“The big surprise was her run in the 100,” Raymond coach Mike Tully observed. “She didn’t approach that mark last year, so it was good to see that her speed is back to where it was before her knee injury.”
Willapa Valley’s girls notched top-three finishes in several events, led by Brooke Friese’s victory in the girls 100 hurdles. Ege also cited the performances of Hannah Cook, Olivia Betrozoff and the Layman sisters, Hallee and Emilee.
“I’m really proud of the team effort,” Ege said. “Great job on all the girls part.”
Montesano’s Donovan Albert won the boys 400 meters in 51.53 and also had a piece of two Bulldog relay victories.
North Beach’s Tawni Blankenship, the reigning state 2A girls pole vault champion, cleared 11 feet to win that event and also captured the long jump at 14-8.
Other Twin Harbors winners included Raymond’s McCartney Maden in the boys 110 hurdles, Elma’s Ray Billerbeck in the boys 300 hurdles, Elma in the boys medley relays and Ocosta’s Alivia Marsh in the girls high jump.
