Montesano’s girls basketball team played a strong defensive game en route to a 64-35 victory over Aberdeen on Tuesday at Montesano High School.

Montesano (3-3 overall) got off to a hot start on both ends of the floor, outscoring Aberdeen (1-4) 20-4 after the first eight minutes of play.

Led by Zoe Hutchings, who had a game-high 19 points, Monte held a 16-point lead at the half.

“We got off to a very good start and played well defensively,” Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield said. “We were able to run the floor and get to the line.”

Aberdeen cut the deficit to eight points in the third quarter, sparked by Aliyah Tageant’s team-high 18 points, 11 of which were scored in the third quarter.

But Monte kept after it, pressing Aberdeen’s offense to force turnovers while feeding the ball to Hutchings to keep the Bobcats at bay.

“I thought our girls responded well after Aberdeen made a run on us in the third quarter,” Mansfield said.

Paige Lisherness added 14 points for Monte.

Chanthaeada No scored nine points for Aberdeen.

Onalaska 47, Hoquiam 30

It was “another day of learning and improvement” according to Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan as the Grizzlies lost 47-30 to Onalaska on Tuesday at Onalaska High School.

Hoquiam’s Charli Sampson-Eastman led all scorers with 11 points.

Sharaya Brydon and Sadie Carlyle scored six points apiece for Hoquiam.

“Hoquiam had some great spirits tonight of solid basketball,” Allan said. “When we had ball movement and player movement in spacing, good things were happening.”

Taholah 63, Oakville 14

Nakeah McCrory scored 21 points to lead the Taholah Chitwhins to a 63-14 victory over Oakville on Tuesday at Taholah High School.

Precious Cross Guns added nine points for Taholah, which used a pressure defense and ball movement to key the victory.

“We rotated players in and out, put pressure on the ball and created turnovers,” Taholah head coach Fred Pope said. “Our team played unselfish basketball tonight, found the open player and we were able to hit some easy shots. We are starting to learn how to play with each other and things will get better.”

Oakville was led by Maria Casihan, who scored 11 points.

North River 40, Lake Quinault 21

Kat Neeland scored 12 points and grabbed 24 rebounds as Lake Quinault fell 40-21 to North River on Tuesday.

Playing with only six players, Lake Quinault struggled to slow North River, including Emily Gumaelius, who scored a game-high 18 points.

“Another tough game. … But (we’re) still slowly improving,” Lake Quinault head coach Travis Carstensen said. “I have a good group of girls that learn and don’t give up.”

Stephanie Venegas scored three points and grabbed 13 rebounds for Lake Quinault.

Wishkah Valley 40, Mary M. Knight 21

Erica Bomhoff scored 16 points to lead Wishkah Valley to a 41-21 victory over Mary M. Knight on Tuesday at Mary M. Knight High School.

Wishkah (1-3, 1-1 Coastal 1B) led 25-7 at the half and also got nine points from Baylee Buchanan and eight points and 11 rebounds from Brooke Askey.

“We played a lot better than we had been playing,” Wishkah head coach Dave Busz said. “They’re starting to take care of the ball and I was pleased with the way they all played.”

Jaydn Davidson scored six points for Mary M. Knight, but was held in check as Wishkah rotated different defenders to cover the Owls’ leading scorer.

Aberdeen 53, Elma 44

Aberdeen outscored Elma by 12 points over the final eight minutes to earn a 53-44 victory on Tuesday in Aberdeen.

After a low-scoring first quarter, Elma overcame a first-half deficit when Sawyer Witt hit back-to-back threes as the Eagles clawed back to tie the game at 22-22 by halftime.

Elma (4-2) took a 3-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Aberdeen (1-3) responded by outscoring the Eagles 17-5 over the final eight minutes of the game.

The victory was the first of the season for the Bobcats, which entered Tuesday’s game losing three straight.

Witt led Elma with 11 points as the Eagles struggled from the field, shooting 15-for-40 (38%).

Cobey Moore scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Eagles, which played its second game in as many days after defeating Pope John Paul II on Monday.

Raymond 56, North Beach 53

Raymond battled back and hit big shots down the stretch to earn a 56-53 victory over North Beach on Tuesday in Raymond.

Down by seven entering the fourth quarter, Raymond (2-3 overall, Pacific 2B) caught fire as Adrian Quintana, Brian Sida and Tre Seydel hit clutch 3-pointers down the stretch. Seydel hit a three with three seconds left in the game to secure the victory over Raymond.

“That was a crazy one down the stretch of the game,” Raymond head coach Derek Rask said. “Our kids have a ton of heart and fight in them. They just kept battling.”

Seydel led Raymond with 25 points. Quintana scored 14 points for the Seagulls, who were sparked by Joseph Villalpando’s energetic defense in the fourth quarter.

“Joseph Villalpando’s energy was off the charts,” Rask said. “And we fed off that.”

North Beach (1-4 overall, Pacific 2B) was led by Reagan Harnagy and Josh Bighead, who scored 11 points apiece. Kyle Fry added eight points for the Hyaks.

Willapa Valley 82, South Bend 52

There was plenty of scoring and plenty of defense to go around for Willapa Valley as the Vikings earned an 82-52 victory over South Bend on Tuesday at Willapa Valley High School.

Willapa Valley (3-1 overall, Pacific 2B) took control in the first quarter, outscoring South Bend (0-5) 23-6 in the first quarter and cruising from there.

“We came out with a point of emphasis to play with defensive intensity,” Willapa Valley head coach Jay Pearson said. “The best thing was everyone contributed and saw a lot of action and they made the most of it.”

Four Vikings scored in double figures. Chad Flemetis led the way with 16 points, followed by Logan Walker (14 points), Beau Buchanan (10 points) and Allen Deniston (10 points). Joseph Pulsifer added eight points and nine rebounds for Willapa Valley.

Onalaska 65, Hoquiam 57

Hoquiam fell behind by double digits in the first quarter and never recovered in a 65-57 loss to Onalaska on Tuesday at Onalaska High School.

The Grizzlies (2-3) fell behind by as much as 14 points in the first quarter. Hoquiam trimmed the Loggers’ lead to eight heading into the fourth quarter, but Onalaska matched Hoquiam point-for-point in the fourth quarter.

Dane McMillan scored a team-high 16 points for Hoquiam. Cameron Bumstead scored 10 points and Zach Elsos scored nine points to go along with 12 rebounds for the Grizzlies. Troy McMinn scored eight points with six rebounds for Hoquiam.

Onalaska’s Kayden Allison scored 28 points to lead all scorers.

Taholah 86, Oakville 22

Taholah’s offense continued to roll as the Chitwhins earned a dominant 86-22 victory over Oakville on Tuesday at Oakville High School.

Led by Izaiah Mowitch’s 24 points, 10 rebounds and six steals, Taholah (3-1, 2-0 Coastal 1B) put the game away in the first quarter, jumping out to a 32-4 lead.

The Chitwhins added to its lead with a 19-4 second quarter.

“We had a very solid defensive night to to along with balanced scoring,” Taholah head coach Tyler Cross Guns said.

James Orozco added 18 points for Taholah with teammate Makya Ortivez-Hicks (10 points) also scoring in double figures.

As a team, Taholah had 27 steals, 23 assists and 41 rebounds.

Oakville was led by Nathan Boyd, who scored nine points.
