Montesano 45, Woodland 6
Montesano quarterback Trace Ridgway threw four touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a 45-6 rout over Woodland on Friday at Woodland High School.
Monte (6-0, 2-0 Evergreen 1A), the 10th-ranked team in the latest AP Poll, dominated its sixth-straight opponent in all aspects of the game. The Bulldogs outgained Woodland (2-4, 1-2 Greater St. Helen’s 2A) 413-121 while Monte’s defense snared four interceptions —two by junior linebacker Cayleb Reninger —and held the Beavers scoreless until the 7:15 mark of the fourth quarter, after the outcome had long been determined.
The Bulldogs started slow, going without a point for the first 12 minutes of the game while throwing an interception and a losing a fumble.
But a 1-yard scoring run from Brent Hollatz early in the second quarter got the ball rolling for Monte, which took a 10-0 lead on a 37-yard field goal by Jordan King four minutes later.
Monte took a 17-0 lead into the half when Ridgway tossed his first touchdown pass of the game, hitting running back Aydan Darst for nine yards with 35 seconds left in the first half.
”We started out really slow, but played really well from the middle of the second quarter on,” Monte head coach Terry Jensen said. “(We) threw and interception early, had an early fumble, but I was proud of our kids. They didn’t get flustered and started playing much better.”
Monte put the game away in the third quarter. Ridgway hit receiver Sam Winter with a 20-yard TD pass in the first minute of the second half followed by Hollatz’s second 1-yard touchdown run of the game midway through the third quarter. Ridgway threw his third TD pass of the game at the 2:23 mark of the frame, hitting King with a 10-yard scoring strike for a 38-0 lead.
Woodland prevented the shutout when quarterback Isaiah Flanagan hit receiver Easton Ortega with a 7-yard touchdown pass with 7:15 left to go in the game.
But Monte responded when Ridgway hit receiver Braden Dohrmann for hit longest TD pass of the game, a 52-yard strike with 4:54 left in the game, giving the Bulldogs the 45-6 victory.
Ridgway went 10-for-14 for 196 yards and ran for 74 yards on 10 carries to lead all Monte rushers.
The Bulldogs defense held Woodland to 57 yards rushing while Flanagan went 8-for-18 for 64 yards and four interceptions through the air.
Aside from Reninger’s two picks, Monte defenders Colby Adams and Alex Mesquita also had intereptions in the game.
Flanagan was under frequent pressure as Ridway, Reninger and Tanner Nicklas each had a sack in the game.
The victory sets up the 1A Evergreen League’s most impactful game of the season to this point, as the Bulldogs will face Hoquiam at 7 p.m. on Friday at Olympic Stadium.
The two rivals are tied atop the league with identical 2-0 records as the schedule turns to the final few weeks of the regular season.

All things considered, PWV head coach Josh Fluke was nothing but proud at the conclusion of Friday’s contest.
“We came out and played an excellent game,” he said. “In my book, it was a win. … (Baker) started to get going in the third quarter, but we didn’t give up and put our heads down and kept playing.”
PWV (3-3, 2-0 Pacific 2B – Coastal) totaled 107 rushing yards, led by Max Smith’s 71 yards on 20 carries.
