Carson Klinger and Teegan Zillyett each rushed for more than 100 yards and Montesano’s defense did the rest in a non-league victory, 32-10, over R.A. Long on Oct. 6 at Rottle Field.
With the Bulldogs up 12-3, Monte’s Seth Dierkop recoved a Lumberjack fumble on the second half kickoff. That ignited a three-touchdown eruption within the next 15 minutes as the Class 1A Bulldogs beat the 2A Lumberjacks for the second time in as many years.
Zillyett converted the first opportunity with a 1-yard TD run early in the third quarter. Then Klinger broke an 80-yard scoring jaunt with 1:57 remaining in the period.
Zillyett’s 2-yard scoring run and Jordan King’s PAT early in the fourth quarter gave Montesano a 32-3 lead. A blocked punt set up R.A. Long’s final TD with 3:04 left in the contest.
Klinger rushed for 158 yards on 18 carries, including touchdown runs of 3 and 6 yards in the first half. Zillyett also cracked the 100-yard barries with 103 yards on 14 carries.
Montesano coach Terry Jensen, however, saved his greatest accolades for his team’s defense.
“I think R.A. Long is a pretty good football team. They’ve been scoring a lot of points. To hold them to a field goal, essentially…is pretty good,” Jensen said. “I thought we rallied to the ball well defensively.
Klinger, Zillyett, Dierkop, Jared Wallace and Gage Iverson were cited as defensive standouts.
The contest also marked the return to action of Monte standout receiver Dakoyta Reninger, who had been sidelined with a partially torn knee ligament. Reninger made three catches for 80 yards.
