Other than a tough loss to Centralia on Jan. 11, Montesano wrestlers took individual and team honors at matches last week.
Rainier tourney
Led by Andy Fry’s individual title, Montesano took second in Rainier’s Sgt. Norton Invitational on Jan. 13.
High-ranked Forks took team honors with 204 1/2 points. Montesano amassed 126 points.
Fry took the 106-pound crown with a first-round pin over Payton Hiebechuck of Klahowya.
Montesano’s Kai Olson was the runner-up at 170 pound. He dropped a 7-2 decision to Adna’s Ashton Dowell in the title match.
Monte’s Cooper Johansson (106 pounds) and Ty Ekerson (113) each tied for third (third and fifth-place matches were not contested due to match limits).
Ocosta’s highest finish were fifths by Daniel Quinby (138) and Tucker Deranleau (285). Montesano’s Aaron Lano (120), Brent Hollatz (152) and Mason Lutz (160) also tied for fifth.
Returning to action following an injury, Montesano standout Tony Williams advanced to the 145-pound semifinal. But he bumped heads with his opponent early in that match and defaulted to undergo concussion protocol.
Still short-handed due to injury and illness, Monte coach Jeff Klinger was delighted with his team’s showing.
“We got a lot of pins,” he said. “We put a lot of emphasis this week on getting pins and it paid off. Even the kids who did not place helped us out with a pin or two.”

A young, undermanned Montesano wrestling team struggled against tough competition in its 53-23 home loss to Class 2A Centralia on Jan. 11.
Montesano wrestled without two of its seniors, with Tony Williams at 145 and Carson Klinger at 160 pounds both sidelined with injuries.
There were some bright spots for the Bulldogs. Andy Fry got the night off to a good start with a pin in under a minute to get the win over Jacob Reyna.
Brent Hollatz also was dominant in his 14-1 win over Jesse Weeks, as was Olson in a technical fall victory. Tanner Rossmaier scored the other Bulldog pin.
Coach Klinger said this was a good learning experience for his team.
“We’re building for the future but we have some kids who can compete right now,” he said. “Centralia is a good team and they’ll be a team to watch at the state tournament. They were the better team tonight but we’ll continue to work. We have a lot of sophomores and freshmen in the starting line up.”
