GHC volleyball breaks even, while women’s soccer team wins first match of the season

Grays Harbor College put its best foot forward in women’s soccer and volleyball during the Northwest Athletic Conference Fall Festival in Eugene, Ore., (held Aug. 27-28).

For the Chokers, they finished the weekend with a 1-1 record in soccer, while the volleyball squad went 3-3 in the preseason friendlines.

In soccer, Cienna Mendez scored twice — once from a penalty shot — and Mary Davis scored as well to lead the Chokers to a 3-0 win over Treasure Valley College on Sunday. On Saturday, Mercedes Cortes tied the match with Blue Mountain, but GHC fell, 3-1 in the opening match of the season.

Emily Bjornsgard had four saves and the shutout for GHC against Treasure Valley. The Chokers also outshot the Chukars, 25-4.

This was the first womens’ soccer match win for GHC since Aug. 2014 and just the second in program history.

In volleyball, GHC played six one-set scrimmages to start the season. On Sunday, GHC knocked off Big Bend, 3-0, but lust to Mount Hood, 2-1. On Saturday, the Chokers picked up two 2-1 wins over Skagit Valley and Everett and fell 2-0 twice to Wenatchee Valley and Clackamas.

Today, GHC volleyball is scheduled to take on Shoreline College, while the GHC women’s soccer team travels to Yakima to face Yakima Valley College.
