Elma girls defeat Tenino

Defensive adjustments help Elma secure the win

A defensive switch turned the contest around as Elma defeated Tenino 69-49 in an Evergreen 1A League game on Jan. 31.

Trailing 10-2 in the first half, Elma (6-2, 11-8) switched to a full-court press and went on a 25-2 run to take the lead and control the rest of the contest.

“We had a slow start and put the press on and rolled from there,” Elma coach Lisa Johnson said. “It was a great team effort. We had a lot of kids contributing all over the court.”

Quin Mikel finished with 17 points and nine rebounds to lead the Eagles, while Peyton Elliott added 13 points, five assists and five steals. Molly Johnston pitched in with 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks and Brooke Sutherby added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The win ended the regular season for Elma, which will host a District IV tournament game against the Trico No. 3 seed on Feb. 10.
