Bulldogs beat Grizzlies in four
At Hoquiam Square Garden, Montesano pounded its way to a 2-0 lead before host Hoquiam got one set back by returing fire and bringing everything up during the Bulldogs’ 25-14, 25-15, 24-26, 25-8 win in Evergreen 1A League play on Oct. 20.
Montesano’s Jordan Spradlin led all hitters with 21 kills, with Shayla Floch adding 11 kills and Hailee Dierks nine kills and 16 digs. Hannah Hatcher dished out 36 assists, Hannah Manley brought up 22 digs and Josie Talley added 15 digs. Josie Toyra had 100 percent serving on 26 serves and added three aces.
“We had way too many unforced errors and we didn’t take care of the ball on our side of the net,” Montesano head coach Debbie Gibson said. “Hoquiam scrambled and picked up a lot of hits. It was nice to come back in the fourth set and play our game, attacking the ball.”
“The biggest thing was we got a lot of touches at the net and that gave our back row a chance to get to the ball,” Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said. “When you hit as hard as Shayla and Jordan, we have to get touches at the net and slow the ball down to get chances. In the third set, we played aggressive and passed the ball well on serve-receive. When Monte gets mad, they channel it very well; we knew it was coming and didn’t respond to it.”
Kamimi Papp had nine kills for the Grizzlies, with Ashley Paladin and Karlie Krohn bringing up 19 digs each. ReyLynn Dunn added 14 digs as well and Paige Folkers dished out 10 assists.
Montesano won the junior varsity match in three sets and the C Squad match in two sets.
Bulldogs in three
Hannah Hatcher contributed six aces and 22 assists as Montesano remained unbeaten with a 25-4, 25-12, 25-23 win over Tenino in Evergreen 1A League play Tuesday, Oct. 18, at Bo Griffith Memorial Gym in Montesano.
Hatcher and Hannah Manley enjoyed 100 percent serving nights for the Bulldogs (6-0, 12-0). Jordan Spradlin led Monte hitters with 12 kills, while Shayla Floch added eight.
Manley and Josie Toyra collected seven digs apiece for Montesano.
“Everybody had an opportunity to play in games one and two,” Monte coach Debbie Gibson reported. “We started slow in game three and took a little time to adjust to a new lineup, but we got back into the swing of things and finished off the match.”
Tuesday’s match doubled as a fundraiser for cancer treatment. The team raised $1,600 that will be donated to the Give Kids the World program based in Florida.
Gibson thanked Roni Sue Toyra for organizing the program and other parents for their efforts.
Monte also won the JV (25-13, 25-14) and C Squad (25-13, 25-22) matches.
