Aberdeen’s Anna Weber finished her sophomore year like she did her freshman year, with a state title in the breast stroke.

Weber won the breaststroke for the second year in a row at the 2A state swim meet in Federal Way on Saturday.

Weber’s breaststroke time of 1:04.85 represented one of three state titles the Bobcats captured Saturday.

Weber teamed up with Anika Eisele, Kayleia Sias and Katelynn Lewis to win the 200-meter medley relay with a time of 1:49.31, just over a second faster than North Kitsap.

Eisele got an individual gold of her own in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57.13 to win the race by .15 seconds.

Weber, Eisele, Lewis and Mellisa May also grabbed silver in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:43.04, about three seconds off the lead.

Aberdeen also saw the podium in the 100-yard backstroke where Eisele took third, posting a time of 59.85. Sias was right behind her with a time of 60.49.

The Bobcats finished fifth overall with a team score of 175.

2B State Tournament

Northwest Christian 35, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley, 26

The Titans got off to a fast start but were snake-bitten by a rough third quarter in Pe Ell-Willapa Valley’s 35-26 loss at Northwest Christian in the first round of the 2B state tournament on Saturday.

The Titans jumped out to a 20-0 lead with the help of two rushing touchdowns in the first quarter and another short touchdown run halfway through the second quarter.

But the Crusaders’ Eli Sander started the comeback with a 62-yard touchdown run to put Northwest Christian on the board on its next possession.

Sander got the scoring off to quick start in the third quarter, taking the kickoff 70 yards to the end zone.

PWV expanded its slim lead with an 11-yard run from Peter Hamilton, pushing the score to 26-14 with about eight minutes to go in the third.

Northwest Christian answered back when Silas Perreiah made it a one-score game with a 32-yard rushing touchdown to bring the score to 26-21.

The Crusaders took the lead at 28-26 with a pass from Jake Gray to Reed Loranger.

Down two points and driving to the NWC 45-yard line with three minutes left in the fourth quarter, the Titans were flagged for illegal procedure on a critical 4th-and-3 play. PWV players contested that unidentified NWC defenders were heard yelling, ‘Go! Go!’ in an attempt to draw the Titans offside. which is a penalty under WIAA rules.

“We could hear them yelling it from (the PWV) sideline, calling cadence,” Titans assistant coach John Peterson said.

The referees threw an additional flag on the Titans for unsportsmanlike conduct, sending PWV into a 4th-and-20 situation. On the ensuing play, the ball was snapped over quarterback Logan Walker’s head, ending the threat, and the season for the Titans.

“I really thought we played a good game,” Peterson said. “We played our tails off. … The kids were so resilient. I’m so proud of them.”

Hamilton had a spectacular game, rushing for 274 yards on 36 carries. The junior, who returned late in the season after suffering an injury against Raymond, also had a team-high 11 tackles.

PWV’s Max Smith had 30 carries for 130 yards, eclipsing the 1,200-yard mark for the season. The Titans (9-3) amassed 431 rushing yards in the game.

Ocosta goes 1-2 in 2B state tournament

A season of record-breaking proportions came to an end this weekend as the Ocosta Wildcats went 1-2 in the 2B state volleyball tournament in Yakima.

Brewster 3, Ocosta 2

Ocosta rallied after a first-set loss to take a 2-1 lead, but any Wildcat hopes for a state title were dashed as Brewster took the final two sets to win Thursday’s first-round game.

Ocosta lost 13-25, 25-15, 25-23, 16-25 and 6-15.

Junior Layne Martin led the Wildcats with 15 kills. Kylee Poirier had 13 blocks, Evalyn Marsh added 19 digs and Emily Snider recorded 23 assists in a loss that sent Ocosta into the consolation bracket.

Ocosta 3, Manson 0

The Wildcats shook off the first-round loss to earn a straight-set win over Manson in the first game of the consolation bracket on Thursday.

Down big facing set point 24-16 in the opening frame, Ocosta’s Layne Martin served a 10-point scoring streak to give the Wildcats the 26-24 win.

Ocosta rode that momentum to win sets two and three in dominant fashion and earn a state-tournament victory.

Kaylee Barnum hammered a game-high 18 kills and fellow Ocosta school-record holder, Emily Snider, put up 21 assists for the Wildcats in the victory.

Defensively, Marsh and Lillyan Barnum each had 13 digs and sophomore Hailey Jones recorded a team-high 7 blocks for Ocosta.

Ocosta won by scores of 26-24, 25-9 and 25-15 to advance to the second day of the tournament.

Wahkiakum 3, Ocosta 2

The Wildcats season ended after suffering their second five-set loss of the tournament, this time to Wahkiakum on Saturday.

Ocosta’s Kaylee Barnum arguably saved her best game for last. The senior outside hitter had a team-high 15 kills, 13 blocks and 21 digs in an all-around effort.

Snider had 35 assists and chipped in eight blocks for a Wildcats team that had 34 blocks in the game.

Marsh had 26 digs and 12 kills for Ocosta in the season-ending loss.

Layne Martin, Camryn Scheuber and Evalyn Marsh were all recognized with WIAA sportsmanship medals.
