The month of May has been very busy at Simpson Elementary. There has been state testing, field trips, Monte Marathon and some fun assemblies.

The fourth grade has been to the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge on May 10 and 14, to the Tolmie State Park on May 6, and visited a tall ship on May 16 and the Squaxin Island Tribe Museum Library and Research Center on May 23. The classes that went on the field trips are Ms. Neils’, Mrs. Fredrickson,’s Ms. Plato’s, Ms. Tucker’s and Ms. Olsen’s.

Every month there is the word of the month assembly. The word of the month assembly is for giving out awards to students who are working hard in class and being good examples.

The word of the month for April was “cooperation.” The students who won the cooperation award for third grade are Destinee C., Scarlet F., Maycee B., Cruz V. and Carter G. For fourth: Kiara W., Mason S., Wyatt G., Londyn J. and Austin B. Fifth grade honerees were Terek G., Benjamin A., Hailey G., Emily K. and Nevaeh J. Awards for sixth-graders went to Cadence C., Jessyca G., Camille L., Samantha S. and Addi K. The words of the month for May are “grit” and “perseverance.” The names for the May award will be posted in June.

Speaking of assemblies, there have been some fun ones this month. First, the senior graduates walked through the halls of Simpson and gave a small speech about what college they are going to, their name and what they will be studying in college.

The other assembly was by African Drum & Dance that were originally from Senegal. All of the performers played the drums and danced. They taught some of the students and teachers how to dance one of the dances. One of the performers could jump about 5 feet in the air. They taught us how to speak some of their language and told us facts about their country and continent.

Another fun thing that students and teachers at Simpson can do is the Monte Marathon. At lunch recess, they can run around the bus parking lot and earn charms as a prize for each lap. If you get a certain amount of laps you can earn a prize from the Monte Parent Teacher Organization. The Monte Marathon run ended May 17. There are also some holidays in May. Mother’s Day was on May 12. On Monday, there was no school because of Memorial Day. Memorial Day is a federal holiday to remember those who fought for America in the armed forces.
