Hello everybody. Welcome back to another edition of Dog Dayz.

It is now officially 2017, and while New Year’s didn’t go as planned, it has still been a great start to the year. Also, the school’s first semester is wrapping up, and I’m hoping to hold onto my 4.0 GPA. Finally, basketball has continued, and I will give you an update on that and the rest of the winter sports.

As I said New Year’s did not go as planned. The plan was to go to our friend’s lake house. However, “The Plague,” that has hit almost every family on Grays Harbor, hit my family all at once. No playing pool. No fire before midnight. No fireworks at midnight. No jumping into the freezing lake on New Year’s Day. On the bright side, I watched a lot of football, which I, of course, enjoy.

“The Plague.” That’s my little nickname for the sickness that has hit Grays Harbor. What stinks about it is, it’s easy to get, and really hard to get rid of. It has put a family member of mine in the hospital, wiped out my entire basketball team and, as I said, ruined my New Year’s plans. This has been worse than any other year that I can remember. Hopefully it’s the last.

This month was also really different. My dad got surgery on his torn ACL on the fifth, and I got to take care of him a lot. It was weird to come home to my dad, when usually he’d be at work. Somehow, someway, after only 2 and a half weeks, he’s already back working. He’s got a little limp, but he’s a fighter.

As this month has gone by there have been more games and less practices for basketball. I definitely like it that way. This month my JV team has done well. The varsity boys have also done great.

Also, in winter sports girls’ varsity basketball was undefeated in league play as I wrote this, while the JV has just lost twice. Wrestling has also been going really well again this year. Montesano owns many weight classes. We will have many guys, in many weight classes who will be making a run for state championships. Pretty exciting.

This month Little Dribblers also wrapped up. As I said last month, I was going to be a coach or a referee. While I do referee sometimes, I am also a coach for the Bobcats and we had a great season. I enjoyed Little Dribblers this year, and I am looking forward to the years to come.

My second semester of school has begun. I’m halfway done with my freshman year. I had finals week which was tough, and unlike anything I had ever experienced. I had all As going into finals, so hopefully I didn’t bomb my English test. It sure was hard, but I think I did well on it. Anyways, it’s always nice to start fresh, and that’s what I’ll be doing.

Something awesome I did this month was go to the Seahawks vs. Lions wildcard game. Boy was it cold. I froze my butt off, but Thomas Rawls made me forget about it when he ran for 150-plus yards. Overall, it was a great win, and definitely worth it.

Before the game, my friend and I got Doug Baldwin’s autograph. Me on my Russell Wilson jersey, and my friend on his phone case. Long story short, my friend’s autograph began to fade away, until recently it officially disappeared. Let that be a lesson to you all — don’t get autographs on your phone case.

Finally, as we move into February, basketball will be behind me, and I am going to be hitting the cages two to three times a week, to get ready for the baseball grind. I am really looking forward to it. I am also going to have football morning workouts, which will be starting in the next month.

Thank you all for reading and I hope your 2017 is off to a great start.
