Lyle Dean Young of Cosmopolis passed away Sunday, March 3, 2019, at Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam. He was 82. Lyle was born March 5, 1936, in Hastings, Nebraska, to Marvin and Inez (Schlachter) Young. Lyle was raised in Hastings until he was nine when his family moved to Grays Harbor in 1945. He attended Weatherwax High School and then joined the U.S. Coast Guard in 1955 and proudly served for four years; his last duty station was at Willapa Bay Lifeboat Station in Tokeland.
On Jan. 18, 1957 Lyle married Patricia Thompson in Aberdeen. She survives him at the family home.
Since coming to Grays Harbor at the age of nine, Lyle wanted to drive big trucks. This lead to his employment for WeyCo Timber in Cosmopolis for 40 years. When he retired May 31, 1999, he had earned his three million miles.
Lyle was a member of the Aberdeen Eagles and was a volunteer firefighter in Cosmopolis for 25 years. He enjoyed woodworking, traveling, motorcycles, canoeing, hunting and jeeping.
In addition to his loving wife Patricia he is also survived by his son Mark (Debra) Young of West Richland, Wash., sister Delores (Bob) Carson of Warrenton, Oregon; two granddaughters Sarah Newson and Alexis Drais; two great granddaughters Bethany Newson and Addison Drais; brother and sister-in-law Chuck and Edda Thompson; along with many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his son Michael Young and his twin sister Lila Blake.
A celebration of life is planned for 2 p.m., Saturday, March 16, at the South Aberdeen Baptist Church located at 620 Fordney St. with Pastor Bob Kenagy officiating. Memorials are suggested to South Aberdeen Baptist Church or Cosmopolis Fire Dept.
