South Beach Bulletin will end publication Aug. 29

Parent company also owns The Vidette, other Grays Harbor County newspapers.

The South Beach Bulletin, which has served coastal communities south of Grays Harbor since 1993, will cease publication following the Aug. 29 edition.

The paper is owned by Everett-based Sound Publishing and is part of the Grays Harbor Newspaper Group, which includes The Daily World in Aberdeen, The Vidette in Montesano, The North Coast News in Ocean Shores and Washington Coast Magazine.

Mike Hrycko, publisher for the newspaper group, last week announced the closure to employees of the group.

News coverage and advertising from the area will be shifted to The Daily World, which will include a dedicated page for South Beach news every Thursday beginning Sept. 5.

“This has been a very difficult decision for us, but we want to provide sustainable coverage and service to our readers and advertisers in that area, and the best way for us to do that is to refocus our coverage and advertising from that area as an addition to The Daily World,” Hrycko said.

“We will continue to cover the South Beach, of course,” said Doug Barker, who oversees the newspaper group’s publications as executive editor. “It’s a major economic driver for the rest of the county, and we have a lot of loyal readers who live there. We’ll include community news such as announcements and calendar items on the new South Beach page of The Daily World. That page will include harder news stories as well, but breaking and timely news will also appear on Daily World pages and online throughout the week as it’s ready.

“And, as usual, we’ll cover Ocosta High sports and other sporting events on The Daily World’s sports pages, and arts, entertainment and community events in the Lifestyle section.”

The South Beach Bulletin was founded in 1993 by Barb Aue, who ran the paper all by herself for many years. She eventually sold it to Sound Publishing and stayed on as editor, retiring in 2017. Since then, the paper has been produced using editorial resources from The Daily World.

The Bulletin is a free-distribution weekly, available on racks throughout the South Beach area. Sound Publishing hopes to convert as many Bulletin readers as possible to Daily World subscribers.
