Following a recount of the entire district, Teresa Purcell remains the runner up in the primary election race for Legislative District 19.
Purcell, a Democrat, and Republican Jim Walsh of Aberdeen (who finished first districtwide) will face off in the general election. JD Rossetti, a Democrat who was appointed to the position late last year after Dean Takko was appointed to replace Sen. Brian Hatfield, will not continue onto the general election in November.
District 19 is comprised of five counties, including a portion of Grays Harbor County. The other counties are Cowlitz, Wahkiakum, Pacific and Lewis.
Each county gathered its respective election staff and canvassing board for a recount on Aug. 25. By the end of the day, the only change was a single vote in Wahkiakum County.
“It was a vote that was marked as an overvote, but should have been marked as a correction,” Wahkiakum County Auditor Diane Tischer said.
Initially, the vote hadn’t been awarded to any candidates, but upon the review during the recount, the vote was counted for Rossetti. The voter had at first voted for Purcell.
“Once in a while one will change (during a recount), but not too many,” Tishcer said.
In Grays Harbor County, no votes changed by the end of the day.
“The machines are incredibly accurate,” Grays Harbor County elections supervisor Lori Ochmann said.
Seasonal staff hired to help with elections were called back into action, Grays Harbor County Auditor Vern Spatz said. Purcell was on hand in Montesano to watch the recount and await the result.
Secretary of State Kim Wyman had ordered the recount when Purcell and Rossetti were separated by only 50 votes. Purcell received 6,411 votes, or 24.2 percent, while Rossetti had received 6,361 votes, or 24 percent. The recount puts Rossetti at a final 6,362 votes.
Walsh had finished with 7,675 votes.
