Enjoy the warm weather, get out and do the yard work, but please be careful.
Grays Harbor Fire District 5 have responded to two brush fires this month, as of Monday, because homeowners’ debris fires spread to fields.
One of the fires required crews from three fire districts as well as the Elma Fire Department to get under control. The state Department of Natural Resources is investigating its cause.
Saturday afternoon, March 16, Grays Harbor District 5 was dispatched to a property off of Thompson Lane in Elma for a report of a field on fire. On arrival, crews found almost an acre burning, including brush and trees.
The landowner stated that he was clearing debris on the property. Fire District 5 personnel were joined by crews from Elma Fire and fire district 12 and 1 to put the fire out. State DNR will be doing an investigation of the incident.
The first brush fire was March 2 near Hurd and McIntyre roads in Satsop. The winds had picked up, and a yard-debris fire spread to a nearby field. Fire District 5 and EFD crews responded and quickly got this fire under control.
“While spring is upon us, and many homeowners are wanting to clear their property from winter storms, we urge everyone to ensure that they are doing so in a safe manner as early indications show that under brush is not so saturated in moisture as many would assume and could ignite and take off quickly becoming a brush/wildfire,” a release from Fire District 5 states.
On Tuesday, March 19, Montesano Fire Department and Grays Harbor Fire District 2 also responded to a brush fire east of Montesano.
