Kelly Hewitt, 15, served in the state Senate last week. Sen. Dean Takko (D-Longview) sponsored Hewitt’s week in the Legislature.

“Being here and speaking to the people who have power was a great experience,” Kelly said . “Being in such a gorgeous place with incredible architecture that is so rich in its history was a great experience.”

Kelly is in 10th grade at Montesano Jr.-Sr. High School, where she is the historian of both the Drama Club and the Sophomore Class ASB. She is vice president of the Gay Straight Alliance and has been involved in theater. She also is a member of National Honor Society and secretary of the Newspaper Club. Outside of school, Hewitt trains horses.

Declyn Foster, a student at Elma Middle School, served as a page last week in the state House of Representatives. She was sponsored by State Rep. Mike Chapman (D-Port Angeles). Declyn is the daughter of Kym and Jerry Foster of Elma.

Pages assume a wide variety of responsibilities, from presenting the flags to distributing amendments on the House floor. Pages support the efficient operation of the Legislature while receiving daily civics instruction, drafting their own bills and participating in mock committee hearings and debates.
