There was plenty of local basketball action on Saturday as multiple Twin Harbors teams took to the court in their respective district tournaments.

Here’s a rundown of Saturday’s action.

GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Rainier 59, Raymond 46

Raymond never quite recovered from a sluggish start en route to a 59-46 loss to Rainier in the 2B District 4 Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday at Montesano High School.

Raymond (28-3 overall) had trouble scoring points as Rainier (18-4) shadowed the Seagulls’ leading scorer and Pacific League MVP, sophomore Kyra Gardner.

The Seagulls fell behind 19-9 by the end of the first quarter and by as much as 14 points at 34-20 at the half.

“The first three minutes of the game were going to be huge for us because we have so many kids that haven’t been in the big lights, per se,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “I wasn’t happy but I thought if we could keep it within 10, we have a lot of game to play.”

Raymond responded in the second half, however, playing better perimeter defense on Rainier’s shooters and taking advantage off of forced turnovers.

“When we went to our zone, I could see that (Rainier) didn’t like it because our zone is a little different,” Koski said.

With less than 30 seconds left in the third quarter, Gardner scored on a steal and fast-break layup to cut the Mountaineers lead to 42-37.

A Gardner free-throw trimmed Rainier’s lead to 42-38 early in the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as the Seagulls would get as Rainier stretched the lead back up to nine points on a Selena Niemi 3-pointer with 5:16 left in regulation.

Raymond would once again chip away at the lead, getting as close as five points after Gardner scored on an athletic turnaround jumper and subsequent foul shot to make it a 51-46 ballgame with 3:10 left.

But Rainier would feed its own dynamic sophomore standout in Kaeley Schultz down the stretch, scoring six of the game’s final eight points to send Raymond to the consolation bracket.

“Kyra always gets the brunt (of the opposing defense),” Koski said. “Can our other kids hit those other shots they are going to get. … We didn’t shoot very well on those open shots.”

Raymond shot 33% (19-57) as a team, including 2-for-19 (10%) from beyond the arc.

Gardner scored 16 points and had five steals to lead Elma.

Hannah Miller scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Seagulls.

Schultz, who was seemingly attached to Gardner’s hip defensively the entire game, led Rainier with 23 points and 13 rebounds.

La Center 64, Montesano 53

La Center got hot from downtown to defeat Montesano 64-53 in a 1A District 4 semifinal game Saturday at La Center High School.

Tied at 13 at the end of the first quarter, La Center (14-7) hit five 3-pointers in the second quarter to pull away from Montesano (13-9), which managed only four points in the quarter.

The Bulldogs fell behind 32-17 at the half.

“We just kind of lost focus in the second quarter and didn’t do a very good job getting out on their 3-point shooters,” Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield said. “We kind of dug ourselves a hole.”

Monte trimmed the lead to single digits in the third quarter, but La Center would respond with more 3-pointers. La Center hit 13 shots from beyond the arc in the game.

Furthering Monte’s problems was a wrist injury suffered by Monte’s second-leading scorer, freshman McKynnlie Dalan, with two minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Before leaving with the injury, Dalan led Monte with 23 points.

Paige Lisherness scored 10 points with Zoe Hutchings adding nine points for the Bulldogs.

Lauren Fox led La Center with 20 points.

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Willapa Valley 67, Morton-White Pass 60 (OT)

Logan Walker, Chad Flemetis and Kyen Phansisay each hit clutch shots late in the game to propel the Willapa Valley Vikings to a 67-60 overtime victory against Morton-White Pass in a 2B District 4 quarterfinal game Saturday at Montesano High School.

Flemetis’ jumper got things going for Willapa Valley (16-6) in the extra period while Walker and Phansisay each hit 3-pointers as the Vikings outscored MWP (12-10) 14-7 in the four-minute overtime period.

“On a night when, in my opinion, we didn’t play particularly well, we missed a lot of shots we normally make and got outrebounded by 15,” Vikings head coach Jay Pearson said. “And you find a way to win when you’re not playing well, that’s a true test of character and heart.”

“We just have a feeling that we never do anything easy and it’s going to be hard,” Pearson said. “But I liked our chances when we scored first when Chad hit that three. I thought, ‘There we go.’”

Pearson also noted that Phansisay, a senior bench player who doesn’t see much playing time, was ready to go when called upon.

“I’m proud of Kyen,” Pearson said after Phansisay’s three, his only made shot of the game. “He’s a true example of ‘be ready when my number is called and it’s my time to prove it.’ He hit a huge three in the corner to seal that overtime win.”

Walker led the Vikings with 24 points, eight of those coming in the critical overtime period on a 3-pointer and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line.

Beau Buchanan scored 16 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Allen Deniston scored 10 points for Willapa Valley.

Willapa Valley will look to advance to its second-consecutive district-title game when it faces Toutle Lake in the semifinals at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Kelso High School.
