Montesano got its 1A District 4 Tournament off to an impressive start with a 60-26 opening-round win over Stevenson on Thursday at Montesano.
Monte (13-8 overall) got off to a good start in outscoring Stevenson (11-10) 19-5 in the first quarter and continued its dominance in the second quarter to take a 35-9 lead into the half.
The Bulldogs continued to hammer Stevenson, posting a 24-7 third quarter to put the game away.
“We got off to a good start,” said Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield, adding his young team had some nerves early, but responded by moving the basketball. “It was a good team win. We shared the ball and found the open player.”
Monte was led by senior center Zoe Hutchings, who scored 18 points in the game.
McKynnlie Dalan added 13 points for Monte, which had 11 players score in the game.
The Bulldogs advance to the district semifinals, where they’ll face La Center at 5 p.m. on Saturday at La Center High School.

Columbia Adventist 50, Wishkah 20
Columbia Adventist Academy held Wishkah Valley to just seven points in the first half as the Loggerettes lost 50-20 in a 1B District IV quarterfinal game on Thursday at Columbia Adventist Academy.
Erica Bomhoff led Wishkah with 11 points.
Brooke Haskey had four points and 14 rebounds and Alana Evensen added nine rebounds for the Loggerettes, which ended the season 7-8 overall.

Onalaska 54, Ocosta 44
Ocosta struggled in the second half en route to a 54-44 loss to Onalaska in a 2B District 4 first-round game on Thursday at Rochester High School.
Tied 28-28 at the half, Ocosta (11-11) fell behind by six after the third quarter but rallied back to cut Onalaska’s lead to three points with approximately three minutes to go in the game.
But Onalaska (16-5) was able to build its lead when Ashton Haight hit several shots late in the shot clock to lead the Loggers to victory and send Ocosta into the consolation bracket.
“Well, tonight was a tough one,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “Onalaska played pretty tough defense utilizing a lot of ball denial which made it tough to run our sets. We had to adjust our offense a bit to a dribble oriented offense which isn’t optimal for us. It was effective for awhile, but then they adjusted and started to pinch off our penetration and we didn’t hit the open man quick enough.”
Quinby was quick to place the blame on himself after the loss.
“Overall, I was very pleased with the effort, but felt like I could have set my guys up better offensively to be more effective,” he said.
Cole Hatton led Ocosta with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Omar Luque scored 10 points for the Wildcats, who shot 20-of-42 (47%) from the field.
Kayden Allison and Haight led the Loggers with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Onalaska shot 17-of-53 (32%) in the game, but held a massive advantage at the free-throw line, shooting 16-of-21 (76%) from the charity stripe to just 3-of-6 for Ocosta.
Ocosta plays in an elimination game against the loser of Morton-White Pass-Willapa Valley on Monday. Time and location to be determined.
