Montesano 64, Aberdeen 35
Montesano’s girls basketball team played a strong defensive game en route to a 64-35 victory over Aberdeen on Dec. 17 at Montesano High School.
Montesano got off to a hot start on both ends of the floor, outscoring Aberdeen 20-4 after the first eight minutes of play.
Led by Zoe Hutchings, who had a game-high 19 points, Monte held a 16-point lead at the half.
“We got off to a very good start and played well defensively,” Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield said. “We were able to run the floor and get to the line.”
Aberdeen cut the deficit to eight points in the third quarter, sparked by Aliyah Tageant’s team-high 18 points, 11 of which were scored in the third quarter.
But Monte kept after it, pressing Aberdeen’s offense to force turnovers while feeding the ball to Hutchings to keep the Bobcats at bay.

“I thought our girls responded well after Aberdeen made a run on us in the third quarter,” Mansfield said.
Paige Lisherness added 14 points for Monte.

Tumwater 74, Montesano 49
Tumwater used a big second quarter to hand Montesano a 74-49 loss on Friday at Montesano High School.
Leading by one point after the first quarter, Monte was outscored 22-8 in the second quarter and never recovered.
“Their pressure got to us a little bit,” Montesano head coach Mark Mansfield said. “We had a few turnovers and they did a nice job of converting our mistakes into buckets.”
Zoe Hutchings scored 23 points to lead the Bulldogs.
Olivia Young scored seven points for Monte.
Tumwater’s Natalie Sumrock led all scorers with 24 points.
“I thought our girls competed really hard and battled to the end against a good squad,” Mansfield said. “We’ll be better for it.”

Elma 60, Corbett 39
Elma opened its Seaside Tournament play with a convincing 60-39 victory over Corbett, Oregon on Dec. 19 at Seaside High School.
Elma got 18 points and 14 rebounds from Jalyn Sackrider and used its press defense to stifle Corbett.
The Eagles held a nine point lead at the half and put the game away with a 16-3 third quarter.
“We started out converting our press and that continued throughout the game,” Elma head coach Lisa Johnson said.
Kali Rambo scored 15 points while Jillian Bieker added nine points and five steals for Elma.

Taholah 63, Oakville 14
Nakeah McCrory scored 21 points to lead the Taholah Chitwhins to a 63-14 victory over Oakville on Dec. 17 at Taholah High School.
Precious Cross Guns added nine points for Taholah, which used a pressure defense and ball movement to key the victory.
“We rotated players in and out, put pressure on the ball and created turnovers,” Taholah head coach Fred Pope said. “Our team played unselfish basketball tonight, found the open player and we were able to hit some easy shots. We are starting to learn how to play with each other and things will get better.”
Oakville was led by Maria Casihan, who scored 11 points.
Wishkah Valley 40, Mary M. Knight 21
Erica Bomhoff scored 16 points to lead Wishkah Valley to a 41-21 victory over Mary M. Knight on Dec. 17 at Mary M. Knight High School.
Wishkah led 25-7 at the half and also got nine points from Baylee Buchanan and eight points and 11 rebounds from Brooke Askey.
“We played a lot better than we had been playing,” Wishkah head coach Dave Busz said. “They’re starting to take care of the ball and I was pleased with the way they all played.”
Jaydn Davidson scored six points for Mary M. Knight, but was held in check as Wishkah rotated different defenders to cover the Owls’ leading scorer.
BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
Seaside 77, Montesano 52
Montesano struggled against perennial Oregon power Seaside en route to a 77-52 loss in the championship game of the Seaside Tournament on Saturday.
Trace Ridgway scored 18 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists as Monte (4-3) fell behind 37-20 by halftime after trailing 14-12 at the end of the first quarter.
Seaside outscored Monte 20-8 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach and win the tourney title on its home floor.
“I’m definitely proud of the kids and thought we came together as a team, on the court and off,” Monte head coach Doug Galloway said of the Bulldogs’ performance at the three-day tournament. “It was a great bonding experience.”

Montesano 51, Cottage Grove 30
Montesano pulled away from Cottage Grove, Oregon with a big fourth quarter en route to a 51-30 victory on Friday at the Seaside Tournament in Seaside, Oregon.
Leading by two points after three quarters, Montesano dominated over the final eight eight minutes, outscoring Cottage Grove 21-2.
Wesley Bjornsgard scored 14 points to lead Monte.
Carter Olsen added 11 points for Monte.
Landon Colburn scored a team-high 11 points for Cottage Grove.
On Dec. 19, Montesano beat Astoria, Oregon, 57-51 in the first game of the three game tournament.

Aberdeen 53, Elma 44
Aberdeen outscored Elma by 12 points over the final eight minutes to earn a 53-44 victory on Dec. 17 in Aberdeen.
After a low-scoring first quarter, Elma overcame a first-half deficit when Sawyer Witt hit back-to-back threes as the Eagles clawed back to tie the game at 22-22 by halftime.
Elma took a 3-point lead into the fourth quarter, but Aberdeen responded by outscoring the Eagles 17-5 over the final eight minutes of the game.
The victory was the first of the season for the Bobcats, which entered the game losing three straight.
Witt led Elma with 11 points as the Eagles struggled from the field, shooting 15-for-40 (38%).
Cobey Moore scored nine points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Eagles, which played its second game in as many days after defeating Pope John Paul II on Dec. 16.

Taholah 86, Oakville 22
Taholah’s offense continued to roll as the Chitwhins earned a dominant 86-22 victory over Oakville on Dec. 17 at Oakville High School.
Led by Izaiah Mowitch’s 24 points, 10 rebounds and six steals, Taholah (3-1, 2-0 Coastal 1B) put the game away in the first quarter, jumping out to a 32-4 lead.
The Chitwhins added to its lead with a 19-4 second quarter.
“We had a very solid defensive night to to along with balanced scoring,” Taholah head coach Tyler Cross Guns said.
James Orozco added 18 points for Taholah with teammate Makya Ortivez-Hicks (10 points) also scoring in double figures.
As a team, Taholah had 27 steals, 23 assists and 41 rebounds.
Oakville was led by Nathan Boyd, who scored nine points.
