The McCleary Chamber of Commerce announced several awards at a dinner held Nov. 17 at the Old McCleary Hotel, said Dee Velasco, president of the chamber.
The business of the year award was presented to hosts Evert and Penny Challstedt of the Old McCleary Hotel. The Challstedts have owned the historic, 27-room hotel since 1985, and which was built in 1912 by Henry McCleary. The hotel serves as a venue for dinners, weddings and other special events, in addition to providing accommodations for overnight guests.
The volunteer of the year award was presented to Barb Anensen. Anensen has volunteered for many McCleary groups and organizations over the years, including the McCleary Bear Festival, the McCleary Food Bank and the VFW Auxiliary. Anensen has also made quilts for veterans.
Charles Fattig was the recipient of a special volunteerism award presented by the McCleary Chamber as nominated by the McCleary Museum and McCleary Historical Society. Fattig has worked at the museum for 32 years as a volunteer and most recently as the museum’s curator. Fattig has been the editor of the museum’s quarterly newsletter and conducts much of the research involved. In addition, Fattig maintains the grounds of the museum.
