Walsh takes lead from Purcell, ahead by 76 votes

Difference between candidates has been close since election night.

The latest updates from the five County Elections offices within the Washington State Legislature’s 19th District show Teresa Purcell losing a week-long paper-thin lead for House Pos. 1 to Jim Walsh.

As of the last ballot count at about 6:45 p.m. on Nov. 14, Walsh, a Republican from Aberdeen, has 25,462 votes (50.07 percent) while Purcell, a Democrat from Longview, has 25,386 (49.93 percent). That’s a difference of 76 votes.

Two hours earlier, at about 4 p.m. on Nov. 14, a ballot count showed Purcell leading with only 15 votes.

All of the results have been close — on election night (Nov. 8), the candidates were 320 votes apart with Purcell in the lead.

The latest results from Grays Harbor County alone indicate Walsh pulled ahead here with 6,226 votes (50.82 percent). Purcell has 6,026 votes (49.18percent) — they are just 200 votes apart in the county at this point.

Grays Harbor officials have counted 28,081 ballots. The county’s voter turnout rate is at 69.44 percent to date.

The 19th District includes portions of Grays Harbor, Lewis, and Cowlitz as well as Pacific and Wahkiakum counties.

The winner replaces Democratic incumbent Rep. JD Rossetti, who was appointed to the seat about a year ago but didn’t garner enough votes during the primary to be included on the ballot. Rossetti and Purcell’s vote totals in the August runoff election were so close that a recount was necessary to determine Purcell was eligible to run in the general election.
