Cars are an important aspect of our society. From the days of its inception, they’ve allowed us to travel from place to place in comfort and in a time-sensitive fashion.
However, cars also allow us to get a glimpse of the past by seeing the engineering designs of generations before. For people who want to see that blast from the past, there is a great opportunity in store for those in the beautiful Grays Harbor region this weekend.
On Saturday, July 16, the city of Montesano hosted its 20th annual Historic Car Show. The event, which was previously held as the People’s Festival before 2003, allowed people from the community, as well as outsiders to come together and celebrate the history of Montesano. The car show is a yearly opportunity for people to give back to the community, as all profits made are given to the Montesano Food Bank.
Dave Foss, who organizes the Historic Car Show, said he is excited to see the event up at full speed again and can’t wait to see the turnout.
“Over 250 entrants are expected to line the streets of downtown Montesano, including classic cars, hot rods, muscle cars, sports cars, rat rods, and motorcycles among other things,” Foss said. “It’s honestly just a nice feeling to have the event back to full size this year after two years of mini-events due to COVID-19.”
Registration, which is $20 per car or $15 with a donation of food for the Montesano Food Bank, starts at 8 a.m. on Saturday. More than 40 awards will be presented. All proceeds earned from the event go to the Food Bank and other local charities throughout the Grays Harbor region.
Foss, who says he entered his 1972 Chevrolet Camaro in the event, noted he was originally approached by the Montesano Chamber of Commerce in 2003 to put on the car show following a transition from the People’s Festival that was normally held during the summer season. He also said that other events were held during the weekend in Montesano outside just the car show.
“The Montesano Saturday Market will be happening nearby in Fleet Park and the Community Center will be hosting a pancake breakfast starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday,” Foss explained. “We’ll also be doing a free kickoff event, sponsored by a local business, Friday night at Fleet Park for participants of the car show with root beer floats.”
Vendors, ranging from food to gift shops, will be set up across the route of the car show and will also feature multiple raffles, including a grand prize of Mariner tickets. According to Foss, one of the big appeals of the car shows is that all profits go back into the community as the event is sponsored by businesses throughout the town.
