Elma boys win East County clash

It may have been a blackout in the stands, but the Elma High School boys basketball team had plenty of power Wednesday night as the Eagles defeated Montesano 52-43.

Elma used a balanced scoring attack to beat their East County rival in front of close to 800 fans, including a student section decked out in all black. All five of the Eagle starters had seven or more points.

“It is a going to be a difficult game when you are playing that rival and we knew it was going to be a dog fight,” Elma coach Marvin Prince said. “I felt like we did the things we needed to do to get the win. At the end we were able to execute when we needed to.”

Elma led 12-5 after one quarter, but Montesano outscored the Eagles 10-9 in the second quarter. The Eagles came out of the locker room and grabbed an 11-point lead early in the third quarter and never looked back.

“We let them jump out to a big lead and then we had to claw our way back the rest of the time,” Monte coach Doug Galloway said. “I thought our kids fought well and played hard. Our mantra is everyday getting better so I think we are getting better. If you go back and look at us from the beginning to now we are getting better. I was proud of the kids. They kept working until the end.”

Montesano senior Kenny Roy was the high scorer for the game with 18 points and senior Kody Usher added nine for the Bulldogs.

The Eagles were led by 11 points from senior Tyson Nauman. Senior Ryan Collin and senior Chance Bremer each scored 10 points for Elma and senior Devon Gilman added nine points.

Monte boys defeat Forks

A second-half surge allowed visiting Montesano to pull away from Forks in an Evergreen 1A contest on Friday night. The Bulldogs defeated the Trojans 62-47.

Leading 26-19, the Bulldogs got up by as many as 18 points in the second half.

Kody Usher and Kenny Roy led all Monte scorers with 14 points each and Logan Truax added nine points.
