ELMA — After last year’s rained out attempt, the I-5 Quarter Midget Club was able to host a Region 9 race this year and brought out 129 participants for the event on Aug. 18-19.

For the I-5 club it was like a special celebration. First, able to host the regional race, second taking the overall win with combined team points and third to see one of their drivers take first in two separate divisions.

Leading the I-5 club, Justin Sample of McCleary, brought home checkered flags in both the Light 160 and Light World Formula divisions. Sample has been behind the wheel of a quarter midget for eight years and brought his style of dirt racing to test the pack in both races.

In the Light 160 Class, Sample had to work his way from a back starting position twice in the scheduled 40-lap race. He eventually gained a second place position around lap 20 and chased down leader Devan West, another I-5 driver.

West stayed out front as Sample had to battle Devon Borden, a third I-5 driver, making a good showing for the club. As the dust settled, Sample had made his way around West, but the club finished one, two with Sample and West out front, as the race was called on lap 38 due to time and 15 re-starts.

Both West and Borden had previously taken first-place finishes in Senior Honda, West and Senior Animal, Borden.

Sample had an easier time in the Light World Formula race leading the entire 40-laps. With minimal re-starts, Sample was able to start passing drivers at lap 30.

Corbin Wickstrom was able to keep pace with Sample through the first 10 laps, but was bounced back to third to follow Sample in for another solid win for the I-5 club.

The region consists of dirt and asphalt track racers from Langley, British Columbia to as far south as Portland, Ore. Six tracks — Elma, Monroe, Graham,Yakima, Langley, B.C. and Portland, Ore. — each host a regional race once a season.

“We were happy that the weather was with us this year,” said Kyle White, I-5 Quarter Midget Club president. “It’s a good race bringing the skills of asphalt drivers against those more familiar with the dirt track.”

Running heat races on Saturday, the drivers ran into the night to try and complete as much racing as possible for the final A-Mains on Sunday.

With quick sprinkles bringing a temporary halt to racing, track crews got the dirt back in shape to finish what they need to accomplish under the track lights. Sunday’s racing went unabated with clear skies and bright sun keeping the track in need of occasional water but perfect for completing the regional racing weekend.

The club will be back at the Elma track Aug. 25-26 to hold a regularly scheduled club point’s race. At the conclusion of the racing they will be hosting novice-training sessions to introduce new and interested drivers to the thrill of quarter midget racing.

As the season comes down to the last few racing weekends — with two additional Regional races — the club looks to the future of youth racing by holding the training sessions to get new drivers ready for the 2013 season.
