ELMA – Rain, rain, did stay away for the I-5 Quarter Midget club, hosting its third club race on June 1.
With club numbers growing and the occasional drop-in from other area clubs, the kids took full advantage of the perfect weather to run a few laps and take some trophies home.
Top winners for the day’s racing: Corbin Wickstrom in the Light World Formula; Brenden White took a pair of wins in both the Light 160 and Senior Honda classes. Junior Honda was won by Megan White, and in the novice classes, Conner Mottinger won for the seniors and Calab Grantham in the juniors.
Most of the day was split between two things — the start of the races and the end of the races.
The start meant that racers would get some time on the track after being rained out from their last outing. The end of the race meant that they could start getting ready to join the big race drivers on the big dirt oval at the Grays Harbor Raceway. Many racers of the I-5 Quarter Midget club would join in the Fan Appreciation Night ceremonies.
The Quarter Midget club was asked to join in the festivities, giving the young drivers some up-close-and-personal time with the drivers they admire. Mixed among the 360 Sprints, IMCA Modifieds and Street Stocks, the Quarter Midget cars and their drivers were dwarfed in comparison. While the parents stood watch over the cars, the kids ran between race cars gathering autographs, pictures, the occasional sweet treat and, of course, racing insights from their favorite drivers.
The season at the I-5 Quarter Midget Club track is shaping up well as noted by club president Kyle White.
The club will soon be hosting another Try-a-Midget day to help promote and give kids an opportunity to take a Quarter Midget out for a test run. Kids between the ages of 5-16 are encouraged to join them at their club track at the Elma Fairgrounds on June 29.
