Bulldog Bobbi Fry takes home plate but watches with Trojan catcher, Ashley Shepherd, as Montesano teammate Staci Schneider rounds second base. Schneider registered a double with the Fry RBI to bring Montesano up 2-0 in the first inning against the Lady Trojans of Pe Ell.
MONTESANO — With the 1A Evergreen Fastpitch League already sorted and District IV games primed, the second-place Bulldogs took on the Pe Ell Trojans in a non-league game at Crait Field on May 8.
Not sure who they will face in the first round of District IV playoffs — Ridgefield or possibly Toledo — the Bulldogs took this non-league game as a preparation for the May 16 double header that will start the District IV Championship rounds.
Montesano’s Staci Schneider registered four strikeouts and only one walk in her 4.5 innings of play for the Bulldogs before she was replaced by Megan Choate after an injury. Choate also fanned four Trojan batters and walked two, but saw three reach over the fence for home runs, as the Pe Ell Trojans beat the Bulldogs, 9-6.
The Bulldog defense was tested early by Pe Ell when Trojan Amanda Woods started the game with a single, advanced to third on a Amber Arrington sacrifice bunt, and was caught stealing home when a ball got away from Bulldog catcher Courtney Swan. Schneider was quick to cover for her teammate and made the tag to prevent the lead-off Trojan from making the first tic on the scoreboard.
Montesano opened up with hot bats when Choate ripped a triple as the Bulldogs lead-off hitter. Choate was quickly brought in off a Bobbi Fry bunt single, who then quickly stole second as the Trojans made a play for Choate at home. Fry did not have to stay on second for long when Bulldog pitcher, Schneider doubled, scoring Fry and giving Montesano an early 2-0 lead.
The Bulldog defense did not lighten up in the next inning and pulled off a double play, as Schneider caught a fastball hit right back to her and turned to take the runner out at second. Montesano added one more run after Charlee Ackley walked and cleanly stole second and third, arriving home on a Choate solid single.
With the Lady Bulldogs up 3-0 after three innings, the Trojans started to pick away at the Montesano lead. Able to load the bases after an initial fly out, Pe Ell started to bring home runners off solid base hitting to even the score at 3-3. During this inning Bulldog pitcher, Schneider, was taken from the field with a hurt ankle and replaced by Choate who had been at shortstop. Chaote inherited two runners and faced Woods as her first batter. Woods took the ball out of the park, scoring three more runs and a lead that would last for the game.
The Bulldogs managed to bring a few more runs to the scoreboard, but was matched each time Pe Ell took its turn at bat, just keeping ahead. Montesano, down by three in the final inning, was eager to to pepper the Pe Ell field with short quick slaps of the bat, but could not get any through the Trojan infield. Pe Ell finished the game taking the Bulldogs 9-6.
Montesano will play one more non-league game before starting in District IV bracket play on May 16.
The Montesano J.V. also fell to the Pe Ell Trojans, 16-10.
