Monte girls stay unbeaten

The Montesano High School girls basketball team stayed undefeated with a 49-28 win over Naselle on Saturday.

The Lady Bulldogs held Naselle scoreless through the first 7 minutes and 45 seconds of the game and were in control throughout the entire four quarters. While Montesano dominated Naselle on the scoreboard, coach Julie Graves was unhappy with some of the errors the team committed.

“It was kind of a letdown,” Graves said. “I felt like we had some unforced turnovers, but I guess we played well enough to win. What I told the girls is we have to maintain the level we want to compete at and I don’t feel like we played to the level we should have tonight.”

Graves said an emotional victory over rival Elma on Friday night may have played into the letdown for Montesano. Without a junior varsity game scheduled on Saturday, Graves tried to play a number of her reserves to give them more varsity playing time than in past games this season.

“I wanted to try to mix some of our younger players in. Different combinations probably created a little less chemistry,” Graves said. “It helps them so that when their time comes to be playing varsity that they shouldn’t be as nervous.”

No matter what the final score, Graves was just happy to have another W.

“The biggest thing after getting the win last night was getting another win tonight. We got two wins in less than 24 hours,” Graves said.
