MONTESANO — Bulldog Jeff Varness got the call and took on the goal-tending duties as the Bulldogs faced the Hoquiam Grizzlies in a 1A Evergreen League soccer match.
Defending the net well as his teammates added a layer of strong defense, the Bulldogs lagged by only one point mid-way in the game.
“The boys did not pressure very well in the first half, but they improved the offense in the second half,” said Montesano assistant coach Scott Rocky.
Grizzly Jonathan Molina scored the initial goal for Hoquiam and set another by penalty kick awarded with 10:27 left in the game to finish the win, 3-0.
Brenner Carlstrom added the middle goal to the Grizzly tally during the 60th minute of play.
The Bulldogs looked to have their hands full trying to defend against the league leaders and down one man due to a three game suspension, but kept Hoquiam back, defeating their shots on goal through the first initial 40 minutes of action.
“In the second half we had some balls that got through, but we played a good solid game, even if the score does not reflect it,” said Rocky.
The Bulldogs, whose record now stands at 5-8. will be returning from a game at Rochester to take on the Elma Eagles in a rival match at Montesano on Thursday, May 2.
