With the Evergreen 1A League title well within in its grasp, the Elma High School boys soccer team dropped two games last week.
Elma (8-5, 7-4) entered its match with Hoquiam on April 30 with a one and a half game lead in the league standings, but the Eagles dropped the contest, 2-1, to bring them back into the three-way race for the league championship with the Grizzlies and Montesano.
On Friday, Tenino made good on its only shot of the first half to nip Elma, 1-0.
Although outshot 14-1 in the half, the Beavers scored midway through the period when they put in a rebound from about 10 yards out.
“They sat back with nine guys behind the ball all the time,” Elma coach Carson Seaberg said. “Even when we did win the ball, they had three guys in front of us.”
The league championship will be decided by the final game of the season. Elma played Toledo on Tuesday and Monte faced Rochester. Wins by both teams would mean an East County showdown in the final game of the season with the Elma winning the league with a win and Monte dragging Elma into a three-way tie with the Bulldogs and Grizzlies with a Monte win. Hoquiam will face Tenino on Tuesday and ends the regular season against Rochester.
