Elma boys soccer keeps league lead
The Elma High School boys soccer team maintained sole possession of the Evergreen 1A League lead with a 2-0 win over Rochester on Monday.
The Eagles (7-2, 8-3) scored both of its goals in the first five minutes of the match and never looked back.
With the match only two minutes old, Elma’s Steven Persell drove from the left wing to about six yards out. The shot pinballed off the feet of Persell, a Rochester defender and the goalkeeper before entering the net. Eagle coaches credited it to Persell, while the Rochester coaches considered it an own goal.
There was no doubt, however, that the second marker was an own goal. A Warrior defender accidentally headed a Donovan Bieker throw-in past his own goalkeeper.
The Eagles had chances to add to their total, particularly on a Persell cross in the second half that barely flicked off the feet of teammate Julian Hernandez.
Elma goalkeeper Tyler Davis made a couple of diving saves to deny the Warriors in the first half. Defender Allen Cedillo cleared the second one away from the net.
“We would have liked to have gotten another goal or two,” coach Carson Seaberg said. “But to go down to Rochester and get a result like that on the road, we’re really pleased.
