As the only 1A team in the Hammerhead Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday, the Elma High School wrestling team came up against stiff competition, but the Eagles managed to place five wrestlers in the top five.
Austin Carrell was the top Elma finisher on Saturday at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.
Carrell, who had injured an elbow in the semifinal, was pinned by a North Mason wrestler in the 220-pound final.
The Eagles produced a trio of third-place finishers in the two-day tourney. Tanner Sample, at 132 pounds, won by injury default over Franklin Pierce’s Austin Olson in the match to decide third and fourth places.
Elma 145-pounder Tyson Dick decisioned Nick Piwonka of Southridge, Ore., 6-2, in his division’s third-place match. Brek McGaughy, at 220 pounds, won a 6-3 decision over a Skyview wrestler.
Elma’s Austin Cristelli placed fifth at 152 pounds.
Elma took 10th in the team competition. Bonney Lake captured team honors.
Considering the tough competition, Eagle coach Jason Dick was happy with his team’s showing.
“The kids came out and battled,” Dick said. “They had a tough semifinal round but they battled back through the back door. The competition stepped up tenfold this year, it was awesome.”
The Eagles will compete in the Vashon Island Invitational on Saturday.
