The Annual Bill Brookshire Bike Rodeo is scheduled for June 14 in the back parking lot of the Montesano High School. This event will run from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. For those not familiar with the bike rodeo, it is a local event put on by the Montesano Police Department for the children in the community to encourage safe riding skills to include recognizing street signs. It is a chance for children to get a free bike helmet, get their bikes tuned-up, and get outside for some exercise. A prize drawing is also part of the day’s activities including the giving away of several bicycles and many other items donated by the local businesses and people like yourself.
One of the key components of the bike rodeo is supplying a bicycle helmet to every child that needs one. It sends a wrong message to allow children to participate in the bike rodeo without a helmet; at the same time, we never want to turn any child away. Thus, your donation for bike helmets and other bike safety equipment is critical to maintain our bike rodeo Program. We typically have over one hundred children attend this event.
The children who receive a bicycle helmet not only benefit during the bike rodeo, but also the rest of the year by having a properly fitted helmet. The balance of the helmets not used on the day of the bike rodeo are quickly distributed in the few weeks thereafter by walk-in requests at the police department.
Anyone who wishes to support this event will be recognized via flyers that are displayed at the event, an announcement made at the event of all who have generously donated and a thank you ad placed in The Vidette with a list of names of all those who donated.
Donations can be dropped off at the Montesano Police Department or mailed to us at 112 N. Main Street.
