Mary Kathleen Walker passed away on March 30, 2013, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Washington. She was born in Hoquiam, Washington on January 16, 1927, the daughter of Lysle Patrick and Esther Elizabeth Havens. Mary Kathleen, who was known as Kathleen, was raised in Montesano, graduating from Montesano High School in 1945. She studied at St. Peter’s School of Nursing in Olympia and graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1948.
Kathleen met her future husband Gerald Walker of Elma and they were married in Montesano on November 27, 1948. He survives her at their home at Channel Point Village, Hoquiam, where they moved one year ago after enjoying 62 years of residence in Montesano.
Kathleen worked as a Registered Nurse at Elma General Hospital from 1948 to 1950. She was the office nurse for Dr. Stan McCool in Elma from 1965 to 1970. Kathleen finished her nursing career in the office of Dr. M.C. Lindel at Montesano until her retirement in 1990.
Known for her gifts of compassion, gentleness, and grace, she was a blessing to others. She was generous with her time and talents, and always put others before herself. She enjoyed being a homemaker and mother, nurturing her children, relatives, and many friends.
Kathleen lovingly cared for her mother Esther who passed away in 2008 at the age of 102.
A lifetime member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Montesano, she was the church organist and choir director for many years as well as a member of St. John’s Altar Society. She also volunteered for the Red Cross Blood Drive for many years.
Mary Kathleen Walker is survived by her devoted husband of 64 years, Jerry; her six children, Teresa Jones (Frank) of Pullman, Janet Holland (Rick) of Anchorage, Alaska, Michael Walker of Seattle, Maureen Espedal (Gary) of Montesano, David Walker (Sandi) of Everett, and Robert Walker (Lynn) of Mt. Vernon. She was the loving grandmother to 13 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Her parents and beloved brother, Vernon Patrick Havens, preceded her in death. She is a descendent of the Fishel family of Neilton and has many cousins who will miss her.
A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2013, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Montesano. The funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 19, 2013, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Montesano with a reception to follow at the parish hall.
