Why did Elma man’s car cross center line, hit tree?

Troopers are still trying to figure out why a 34-year-old Elma man crossed the center line of West Matlock Brady Road and hit a tree — and then fled from the scene Saturday morning.

His two passengers were left in the vehicle with injuries. One 30-year-old Montesano man was transported to Mason General Hospital while another 30-year-old Montesano man, also a passenger, refused aid, according to the Washington State Patrol.

The Elma man was driving a 1997 Ford Explorer northbound on West Matlock Brady Road near West Satsop Maple Glen at 7:17 a.m. when the vehicle crossed the southbound lane and continued off the roadway until it hit a tree, a memo from the State Patrol states. The vehicle was a total loss. The accident happened eight miles northwest of Elma in Mason County.

The case remains under investigation with possible charges pending.
