McCleary Mayor Gary Dent has tapped Todd Baun to be the interim public works director for the city for the next year.
Baun, who is currently the public facilities manager, is a union employee. Per a memorandum of agreement between the city and his union, Baun would hold the exempt position for the next year — but not give up his union seniority or membership.
The original memorandum of understanding calls for Baun to be paid a salary plus receive one and a half times the agreed compensation level for overtime.
McCleary Councilman Brent Schiller objected to this language, saying that the public works director is an exempt, salary position — and shouldn’t be paid overtime. Schiller and his fellow council members agreed for Baun to hold the role so long as the provision is stripped out of the contract.
The matter heads back to negotiations between the city and the union.
