A 19-year-old McCleary woman and a 19-year-old Montesano man are dead after their vehicle left the roadway outside Summit Lake on Highway 8 in Thurston County Wednesday night. Their vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a tree, going so fast that it split their vehicle in two, according to Trooper Guy Gill, who took photos of the scene and sent the news out first via Twitter.

The victims’ names were not released Wednesday night.

The accident happened shortly after 7 p.m. at Mile Post 18 on Highway 8.

“The male was driving the vehicle at the time of the collision,” Gill said. “He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.”

The female was the passenger.

Gill said speed was a factor in the crash, which “left the roadway, struck a tree, and was separated into two pieces.”

No other vehicles were involved in the accident.

A picture Gill took showed the vehicle was smashed to bits and another picture showed the bark was gone off a good section of a tree.

Gill said he felt compelled to share the photos “so the images I release will be used instead of the much more inappropriate ones people take while driving by the scene.”

An official press memo showing the circumstances of the accident was not yet available Wednesday night.
