Record-low number of traffic collisions in Grays Harbor

Grays Harbor County saw a record-low number of traffic collisions in 2013 and zero traffic fatalities on county-managed roads, County Engineer Russ Esses reported.

According to preliminary data from the county, 99 collisions were reported last year, a 70-percent decline from the modern-day record high of 343 collisions in 1976. In 2012, 109 collisions were reported, with three fatalities.

Injury accidents have declined 85 percent from 240 in 1976 to 37 in 2013.

Collisions involving alcohol, drugs, speeding, right-of-way and driving over the center line have seen a significant decrease over the past 20, whereas accidents involving inattention, weather and defective equipment have not, according to the press release.

Esses cites numerous legal reforms on seat belt usage and driving under the influence as contributors to the decline in collisions and injuries.
