Malone man faces child rape charges

A nearly 16-year-old girl has told detectives that a 39-year-old Malone man consistently raped her when she was younger.

Steven Mathews has been charged with two counts of child rape and one count of child molestation in the first degree.

The victim alleges that the incidents began when she was about 7 years old and lasted a year or more and “that each incident was similar in nature.”

Charging documents filed in Grays Harbor Superior court note that Mathews would be watching the girl for periods of time and “before she would watch TV or play games,” she had to let him touch her inappropriately with his fingers or tongue.

“The defendant would have her take her pants and underwear off each time, but he would keep his own clothes on,” the charging documents state, arguing that “this was normal behavior.”

“She stated there were a few occasions when it hurt,” the charging documents state. “The defendant would tell her not to tell anyone what happened.”

When the victim was 8, she allegedly told an adult she trusted what had happened, who then allegedly confronted Mathews.

“He denied that anything happened,” the charging documents state. “After she told, the defendant stopped touching” the victim.

Mathews allegedly admitted to detectives the inappropriate touching only happened on two occasions, not as often as had been detailed.

Mathews is in the county jail on a $100,000 bail.
