Malone man charged with child molestation

A 39-year-old Malone man has been charged with felony child molestation charges for inappropriately touching a 6-year-old girl.

Grays Harbor Superior Court Judge Mark McCauley set a $100,000 bail for Steven Mathews, who remains in Grays Harbor County Jail. Mathews pleased not guilty on Monday.

After interviewing family, detectives reported that Mathews had allegedly been abusing methamphetamine and “acting weird lately.” He had moved out of his house and only returned to collect “some guns and clothing from the home and left again.”

The young girl’s aunt told detectives that the little girl reported that Mathews “licked her in the pee pee.” The girl confirmed the account with the Children’s Advocacy Center.

Mathews told detectives he was giving the girl a bath and allegedly admitted to the inappropriate contact, which he “maintained happened only once and lasted approximately one second before he realized what he was doing was wrong and stopped,” the court filings state.

Mathews wrote to the court that he wanted to be released “so I can be around people who are going to help me recover and know who I am and truly know I want help. I can’t get that being incarcerated. I will not run.”

If he makes bail, Mathews must appear before the judge again before he’s released. He was also ordered not to be around anyone under the age of 18.
