MONTESANO — The Grays Harbor County commissioners on Monday awarded the demolition of an old two-story Mexican store in Aberdeen to Gene Yakovich Jr. Trucking of Aberdeen.
Demolition of the building at 1701 Simpson Ave., located near Duffy’s, will happen in the next couple of weeks.
Yakovich had the low bid on the project at $22,349 — roughly half of what the county thought it would take to demolish the building. The county already spent about $10,000 on the asbestos removal process.
The building once housed a Mexican store, plus a small restaurant and had apartments upstairs.
The Assessor’s Office says the 5,625-square-foot building was built in 1927 and is located on an 8,050-square-foot lot with a combined value of $171,400. The county got stuck with the building after the owners didn’t pay their taxes and the city of Aberdeen requested the county tear it down.
