A 21-year-old Cosmopolis woman says she was raped after she was picked up from hitchhiking near a campgrounds outside Montesano.
Grays Harbor deputies responded to a call at 11:19 p.m., Monday of a possible sex offense as she was being treated at Summit Pacific Medical Center. The encounter apparently happened earlier that night, according to Chief Criminal Deputy Steve Shumate.
The woman had been camping with her parents at Wynoochee Wildwood near Montesano when she left her tent and decided to leave the park and walk toward Highway 12. She was intoxicated at the time, Shumate said.
“The victim reported that she started to hitchhike on Geissler Road and a silver-colored, four-door car stopped and the male driver offered her a ride,” Shumate wrote. “The parents, still believing their daughter was in her tent, had left the park and approximately two blocks south of the park, observed a female in the ditch. When they stopped to check on the person, they realized at that point the female was their daughter and took her to the hospital.”
Shumate says the woman was taken to St. Peters Providence Hospital in Olympia for a sexual assault exam. She “sustained minor scratches to her hands,” according to Shumate. Shumate says it may take a month or so to get results from a DNA analysis.
She told detectives that the suspect was a white male between 40 and 50 years of age, with a full beard and a scar below his left eye. Call 911 or the non-emergency line of (360) 249-3711 with more information.
