MONTESANO — The Grays Harbor County commissioners found themselves in need of a third county commissioner Monday morning when Commissioner Wes Cormier recused himself from approving a promotion for his brother, who works in the county’s Juvenile Detention Facility.
Detention Director Greg Reynvaan had selected Cormier’s brother for the position. But Cormier said he didn’t feel comfortable approving the request because of the clear conflict of interest.
With Commissioner Herb Welch on continued medical leave, that just left Commissioner Frank Gordon to approve the request. However, two votes were needed. Gordon said that Welch, who is under rehabilitation at a facility in Hoquiam, may feel better enough to do some votes by telephone in the coming weeks. Until then, the promotion is on hold.
“I think my brother will understand,”Cormier said. “It’s just clear to me that I don’t want to be perceived in using my commission seat to help my brother’s career.”
