Bailey winning re-election in Fire District 5

MONTESANO —Gerald Bailey is headed to another term as commissioner for Fire District No. 5.

Firefighter Derek Hamblin challenged incumbent Bailey for the position.

Bailey managed to get 62.48 percent of the vote or 513 votes to Hamblin’s 37.52 percent or 308 votes. At least 263 people chose not to vote in the election, a tally from the Auditor’s Office shows.

There were 3,087 ballots sent to Fire District 5 voters. That means election results in the district stood at about 35 percent. The next vote count is on Friday.

Bailey was seeking his third term as fire commissioner. He served one term in the 1980s and then got back on the commission more recently to finish a second term. Fire commissioner terms last six years.

Bailey was also a volunteer with District 5 at Porter for 28 years and chief at Porter for 18 years.

Hamblin, 35, is a senior operator in the bleach process at Cosmo Specialty Fibers in Cosmopolis. He lives between Brady and Satsop.

Bailey also worked at the pulp mill in Cosmopolis, retiring after 34 years as a maintenance millwright when Weyerhaeuser shut it down in 2006. Cosmo re-opened it about five years later.

Both candidates said they were concerned about the fiscal safety of the Fire District’s budget and both supported the fire district bond for new ambulances, which also passed Tuesday night with 69.5 percent.
